Power supply to 15 suspected gambling dens gets cut off

KUCHING: The police and Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) have disconnected the electricity supply to 15 premises here, suspected of running illegal gambling activities.

According to acting Padawan District police chief DSP Lim Jaw Shyong, the premises are located in Kota Sentosa, Kota Padawan, Batu Kawah, and Matang areas.

“These illegal gambling activities are said to have been carried out within the premises, hidden from public view,” he said in a statement.

Lim said the integrated operations on Friday were carried out under Section 21A(1) of Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

He pointed out that through the Inland Revenue Board, eight business premises had also been blacklisted from renewing their licences.

Between Jan 1 and Sept 25, Padawan police conducted 322 raids and arrested 424 suspects.

From the figure, 113 suspects had been charged in court for various offences.

“During this same period, we have also disconnected the electricity supply to a total of 85 premises,” Lim added.
